Scanning
Hallo
everybody, welcome back to my blog! this time I will tell you about one of the
reading techniques, that is scanning which delivered by Mr. Irwan Sulistyanto
himself at the meeting on September 27, 2021. So, let's get started!
The definition of scanning is a technique
of reading a text quickly to get specific information and need fast eye movement.
It is used when we know what we want to search so that we don’t need to read
all the text.
Example
A learner taking a reading test needs to scan a text on population rates quickly to find out if a series of statements about the population figures are true or false.
Using your hands can help you focus while scanning. When you point to the text list, your eyes are not only focused on one text but also the text above and below it. Let your eyes work to find the information you need.Usually we used this technique to read dictionary, phone number, menu list, train schedule, etc.
Tips and
trick scanning reading techniques work:
- Must know what to look for in the text. First set one word or word fragment to be a keyword.
- Find the page where we can find these keywords, use the index, which is on the appendix page at the back of the book.
- Narrow the search area if there is no index, or there is an index in the book, by reading the table of contents. If we find a page number in the index list, double-check the page number on the table of contents page, find out what chapter and sub-heading the page number is in. Estimate whether it is in accordance with the keywords and thoughts that we want to find under the title or subtitle?
- Read a scan of the pages found and if the keyword in question is found, read the one sentence where the keyword is.
