So, what is the meaning of the topic and main idea?
Topic is the main core of the entire writing content, the first thing that is determined when the author will write.
Main idea is a significant information that tells about over all idea of the topic, title, paragraph, or text. The main idea can placed in the middle or at the end of the paragraph.
How to Determine Topic
- Read the first and second lines of the paragraph first, if there is only one paragraph.
- Find keywords that are always repeated at the beginning, middle or end, especially the conclusion section.
- These keywords can be synonyms or words with the same meaning.
If the text contains many paragraphs, usually the first paragraph is an introduction to the text, while the topic (subject) is very likely to be found in the second and third paragraphs.
There are 2 types of main idea, what are they?
- Stated : main idea that is clearly inscribed in the paragraph.
- Implied : the main idea is not clearly written and must be implisit from clues set in the paragraph.
